Feb 16 The Pearl Diver by Jeff Talarigo

More than anything I found the story about the leprosarium on Nagashima the most interesting part of this novel, The Pearl Diver. Though Talarigo’s language is also fabulous – the descriptions of the day to day life on the island and what it was like to have leprosy in those days was moving and fascinating. This book tells a side of history that I really knew nothing about and I learned a lot from this book. The fact that “Miss Fuji” is punished because she takes night time swims and must help perform late-term abortions is absolutely horrifying and haunting – worse yet that this story is based on fact. The cruelty of man to man always astounds.
